Frequently asked questions about Portland

What every runner asks before booking

What is the weather like in Portland on October 4?

October is one of the best months to run in Portland. The average morning temperature is around 8-12°C (46-54°F) and rises to 16–18°C (61–64°F) in the afternoon. Low humidity, low chance of rain. Ideal marathon weather: cool enough to run hard without overheating. We recommend bringing a disposable thermal layer for the pre-start corral.

Do I need a passport or visa to run Portland?

If you are a U.S. citizen or legal resident, you do not need a passport or visa. Only official identification: Real ID driver’s license or valid passport. If you travel from outside the U.S., ESTA (electronic travel authorization) is mandatory, and we guide you through the process before the trip at no extra cost.

What happens if I do not qualify for Boston?

Nothing changes in your package. Portland Marathon is a certified course and Boston Qualifier eligible, but that only matters if you want your time to count toward Boston qualification. If your goal is to run your first 42K, improve your PR, or simply enjoy the experience, the package is exactly the same. BQ recognition is a bonus, not a requirement.

Is the hotel really close to the start line?

Yes. Royal Sonesta Portland Downtown is right downtown, less than a 10-minute walk from Waterfront Park (start and finish of the marathon). You do not need Uber or public transit at 5 AM. You leave the hotel, walk 8–10 blocks, and you are in the corral. This is one of the most underestimated details — many runners choose cheaper hotels 30 blocks away and ruin their race morning.

What if I need to cancel after paying the deposit?

The $599 deposit is non-refundable due to our providers’ policies (hotels and event organizers have already received the money in your name). But it is transferable to another person or another Visterra Runs marathon within the following 12 months. We recommend purchasing travel insurance with cancellation coverage — we can help you find one with no extra commission.

How do I get from the airport (PDX) to the hotel?

Portland has the MAX Red Line, a light rail line that connects PDX airport directly to downtown in 40 minutos for $2.80. It is efficient, safe, and affordable. We send you a step-by-step guide with schedules, the correct station, and how to buy the ticket. If you prefer private door-to-door transfer, we coordinate it as an upgrade upon request.

Can I travel with a companion who does not run?

Yes, absolutely. We can build a “companion” package with shared hotel and event logistics guidance without marathon entry. The price is lower than the runner package because it does not include the official race entry. Contact us when booking and we will send you an exact quote.

Have any questions before booking?

Message us on WhatsApp and we will reply in less than 2 hours. No commitment, no endless form. You speak directly with the bilingual team.
